Text: Luke 4:40
As the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various kinds of diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on each of them and cured them. (NRSV)
How many people do I know that are going through hard times? Life is hard, we live in a world that is broken and, in many cases, unforgiving. We make mistakes, we make bad choices, we sometimes even sin boldly. All these things chip away at our humanity. At least, they chip away at the humanity God intended for us when God envisioned a creation that would receive his love, love him back, and love each other with the kind of healthy love God expresses.
And, of course, there is physical sickness that plagues us in this broken world. The COVID pandemic which will be with us for years to come, the flu which continues to take too many lives, cancer which has become more prevalent as we flood our environment with toxic items God never intended to be in our air, water, or food.
We all know someone who is struggling with either, physical, mental, or spiritual sickness. The question that this text raises for me is, “Why am I not bringing the people who I know who are suffering from this broken world to Jesus?” Do I not really believe that Jesus is still the great physician? Do I not really believe that Jesus is the answer to the world’s problems? Do I not really believe that a healthy relationship with God through Jesus will bring about life-changing results for all how are sick, lost, or weary?
Luke tells us that “all those who had any who were sick with various kinds of diseases brought them to [Jesus].” Why are we not bringing people to Jesus still today?
Pray with me:
God of love and God of healing give me the faith in your Son Jesus to bring those I know who are suffering to him that they might be healed. AMEN.
