Flat Tires of Faith

Last week, I brought my wife's car into the shop because the tire was losing air.  The problem didn't begin just last week though.  Actually, I think the problem started before we even moved to Absecon.  Her tire would lose some air, so I would put some air in it.  It would last for a week or two, and then the low tire pressure light would come on again.  So, I put air in it again.  And this continued for a couple months.  Finally last week we were able to see what we couldn't see before; there was a nail in her tire.

Every time I put more air in her tire, that was a temporary solution.  It wasn't really fixing the problem, it was just hiding the problem.  It wasn't until we brought the car into the shop that the problem received a permanent solution.  The nail was removed, the hole was patched and the tire hasn't lost any air since.

Sometimes we get a slow leak within ourselves.  It may be a slow leak in our happiness, in our confidence or in our faith just to name a few.  But when we notice that small leak in ourselves, how do we fix it?  Do we find temporary solutions or permanent ones?  Temporary solutions could look like this: taking a day to do something we really love to do, or going to dinner with someone who sees the value in us, or reading the Bible when we feel lost.  They're all good things to do, but they're only temporary solutions.  Taking a day to do something we love is great, but what about the next day?  Going to dinner with someone who lifts us up is great, but what happens when they're not around?  Picking up the Bible when we feel lost is great, but it won't prevent us from getting lost in the first place.  When we identify a slow leak in ourselves, let's find a solution that will be permanent, a solution that fixes the problem instead of just hiding it.

A permanent solution could look something like this:  finding a way to incorporate the things and people we love into our every day lives.  Or, it could look like surrounding ourselves every day with good relationships that see the sacred worth that we have.  And it could mean reading scripture every day to prevent us from getting lost.   These slow leaks may be hard to find.  They're not always obvious.  Sometimes it takes time for their full affects to be seen and felt.  But they are there, and they should be addressed with permanent solutions.  Amen!
