Not Knowing All the Details

Text: Hebrews 11:8
By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. (NRSV)

How much faith does it take to head out not knowing where you are going?  That has always been hard for me.  On our first vacation as a newly married couple, Linda and I had decided to go camping in Virginia.  This was before G.P.S. was a thing.  I was poring over maps and directions and Linda asked me what I was doing.  I told her that I was trying to figure out the best way to get to the campground.  She told me that I was being ridiculous, we just head south!

Well, God told Abram (it was before his name change) to “just head south” and, Abram “headed south”.  Have you developed enough trust in God to go where God sends you?  When you pray and listen for God’s still small voice in your spirit, are you willing to jump up and do what you hear God calling you to do?

How many blessings do we miss by second guessing God’s direction?  Seldom does God give you all the information you would like to have when God calls.  I think that this is because God is not asking you to decide about whether it sounds “doable”, God is asking you to make yourself available.  And that is all.

Pray with me:
God of my life, speak into my heart your intentions for me and, then, give me the courage to follow without knowing all the details up front.  Help me to do risky things in your name.  AMEN.
