Text: John 20:28
Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ (NRSV)
Modern Christianity seems to focus more on the “friend we have in Jesus” than on the fact that Jesus is our “Lord and our God”. We seem to want to be in a cozy relationship with Jesus. We want to think of him as our brother or our best friend.
The only problem with that, is it erodes the fact that our relationship with Jesus is anything but equals sharing a mutual beneficial relationship together. Jesus is very God of very God. Jesus is our Lord and Master, the director of our life.
If Jesus were merely a friend, we could take or leave his “advice” to us about the way we are living our lives. We could ignore his prodding to live in a way that is upright and righteous. We could weigh Jesus’ words as just the input from one of our many friends or advisors.
But Jesus is more than a friend. Jesus is the Lamb who sits on the throne of God. He is King of kings, and Lord of lords. He has rescued us from our sins and from death. He is the light on our path. He is the light of the world. His loving kindness guides our ways. And, he has called us friend… But he is so much more than a friend, he is our Lord and our God!
Pray with me:
Jesus, you love me more than I can ever imagine. You walk by my side and give life to my days. You are certainly a friend to me. Remind me that you are so much more than a friend. Remind me that you are my Lord and my God. AMEN.
