Text: Luke 8:16
‘No one after lighting a lamp hides it under a jar, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. (NRSV)
In the Gospel of John, we read that Jesus is the light of the world and that his light shines in the darkness and no amount of darkness can obscure the light (see John 1:4-5). In Matthew, Jesus calls his followers the light of the world (see Matthew 5:14).
If we who follow Jesus are the light of the world as Jesus was the light of the world when he walked upon this earth, it is important for us remember that we are on display. The things we do are not hidden under a jar or under a bed, but our words and actions are on full display like a lamp on a lampstand.
A lamp will be seen no matter how dark it is. One might even argue that a lamp is most obvious the darker its surroundings. If we do not shine the light of Jesus’ love into the world, then we become part of the darkness that tries to obscure the truth of God found only in Jesus Christ.
How are you doing in these broken and dark times? Is your light shining in a way that reveals the truth of God to those who are groping in the darkness? Are you able to say that no amount of darkness will ever take the love of God from you? Do you continue to draw on God’s strength to keep the light lit?
Pray with me:
God of love and God of light continue to fill me with your Holy Spirit in these dark and broken days that your light might shine in me and that I might be a light of your truth for those who are groping in the darkness. AMEN.
