Deeper Connections

Text: Luke 8:20-21
And he was told, ‘Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.’  But he said to them, ‘My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.’ (NRSV)

I love my sisters but, we don’t hang out together.  Our families have never been all that close.  It is not even that I would not hang out with them it is just that we don’t have all that much in common.  However, when I see a stranger wearing a hat or a shirt that lets me know that they have served in the military, there is an almost instant connection.  There is something that deeply connects a person who has served in the military with those who have a shared experience like being deployed to a combat zone.

I think Jesus is asserting a very similar principle.  It is not that Jesus doesn’t love his mother and his biological half brothers but, his deeper connection is with those who are profoundly connected with God.  He feels an instant connection with those who intentionally place themselves in the presence of God to hear God’s word and then live out their faith in all that they do.

When one lives that way, connected to the word of God and living out God’s word in their life, there is a deeper connection with Jesus.  It is a connection that goes beyond the biological bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood.  It is a connection that binds the heart, mind, and spirit of the individual with Jesus.

Pray with me:

God of love and God of relationship speak your words of truth and life into my spirit that I might follow your path in all that I do, binding my life deeply within the life of Jesus.  AMEN.
