Taking God for Granted

Text: Luke 17:17-18
Then Jesus asked, ‘Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? 18Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?’ (NRSV)

I don’t know if this verse was designed to engender the feeling I have when I read it, all I know that when I read it, I wonder how many times I have taken all that God does for me for granted.  I read this verse where nine out of ten who received amazing healing from God through Jesus, never thought to return and give thanks and I think, you know, God does amazing things in my life all the time, and I often don’t stop what I am doing and lift up prayers of praise to God.

Think about your day yesterday; what amazing thing happened for which you never gave thanks to God?  You woke up with the breath of life in your lungs.  You most likely had more food than you could ever eat without throwing some away because it went bad.  Most if not all of you who are reading this have a roof over your head and warm clothing to wear.  Most if not all of you who are reading this have an air conditioner you will turn on when it gets too hot outside.  You more than likely have never gotten thirsty for lack of available clean drinking water.  I could go on and on, but my point is that all these things we often take for granted day in and day out, should remind us that we have been blessed by God.  And we should all take time out of each day to return thanks for God for the love he continues to pour out on us.  I know I need to do that more.

Pray with me:

God of love and God of all good gifts forgive me when I go through my day without thanking you for the amazing things with which you have blessed me.  I thank you for all the good things in my life and how you see me through the hard times.  I praise you for your love and the life you have given me.  AMEN.
